The Landis Taipei Hotel

First let me I'm an American living abroad and have travelled much. As part of a tour package, my 2 sons and I got to stay at the Landis hotel. We were all delighted. The staff welcomed us and everytime we came back they'd open the door and say, "welcome back". Our room was immaculate with all the finest Asian extras (soaps, shampoos, comb, and of course a hair dryer). The staff actually came to our room to complete check-in...NO lines to wait in! On the desk were 3 packets which included personalized stationary and business card we could use to give to the taxi drivers to ensure we got back each evening. It made coming home from the night market easy. The extra amenities were great too. Since there were 3 in the party, they set up an extra bed that you would not know was just a cot. Breakfast was included in our package. It was one of the nicest breakfast buffets I ever saw. They had a concierge as many hotels do but they even there they kicked it up a notch. I asked about a place to find a rosary (not easy in a country that is primarily not Christian). When I returned from my trip, I had an envelope on my desk with typed information on how to get to 2 locations where I might find one. They'd even called to find out when they closed and attached a marked map so I could get there. To sum it up, the hotel and staff were some of the finest you will ever find. If we ever get to return, we will definitely stay there again.

Shin Li Night Market

If you've ever seen the night markets on TV and wanted to experience one, just hop a taxi and 10-15 minutes later you'll be part of it. As in all large crowds, you need to watch your belongings. There are sights to astound and yet you can find ones even suitable to you. We found a place that sold fresh from the aquarium x-large shrimp that they would catch then grill for you. YUM!
